Nicolas Sarkozy versus Ségolène Royal
Short comparison between two policies

The two main candidates, Nicolas Sarkozy (UMP) and Ségolène Royal (Socialists) have very different political programs. The upcoming French election is far from being just a “man versus woman” race. Indeed, their visions and proposed solutions are worlds apart:

Imagine a worker earning € 2214 per month, who spends € 2660, and runs up a debt of € 160,560: This is what the current state of France is like. Can this citizen borrow more? No, because he lives above his means without even being able to pay off his debts! Such a citizen would have to declare bankruptcy!

The policy implemented by the current UMP majority over the last four years has begun to bear fruit. France is becoming a leader in European growth. The rise in the purchasing power of the French is at its highest in six years. The number of unemployed people has fallen 13% as of the end of 2006, and 200 000 jobs have been created in one year.

The Socialist project would like to wipe out these results by bringing back the old recipes: more taxes, more deficits. Tax and spend is their real project.

Ségolène Royal & the Socialist party’s project consists of:

  • Spending an extra €115 billion
  • Raising taxes
  • Reintroducing nationalisations
  • Imposing the “35 hour” work week to everyone
  • Keeping the budget deficits

Nicolas Sarkozy & the UMP party’s project consists of:

  • Giving priority to reviving the French economy
  • Reducing taxes rather than penalizing work
  • Recognizing everyone’s social and economic role
  • Allowing people to work more to earn more
  • Increasing family allowances for the first child born in a family
  • Reducing inheritance taxes

Social progress can only be the result of a vibrant economy, not vice versa.
